A lifestyle blog - Its a jumble from my world a bit of everything - loves, likes, lists.

I would love to do yoga more - it's a general feeling and really no excuse other than time and the lack of it but I when I can't go to class I do try at home but I find class easier because them I am more disciplined and I enjoy the rhythm and flow of someone teaching me as well as feeling the energy of other people in the class. At home I get a tad distracted!

One thing that I do not enjoy about yoga is doing anything upside down. It freaks me out and makes me feel super out of control (no surprises there). I had meningitis two years ago so spending time upside down is also not ideal in terms of recovery (long term side affects of meningitis can take a couple of years to subside). So after been told not to hang out upside down to much I have pretty much avoided it all together. Any pose that requires me to put my head back makes me feel slightly panicked and as I am tall I always feel like the "fall" is going to be a lot worse than it probably will because there is a lot of limb all over the show (can you tell by now control is a big deal for me LOL).

But in all, I have always had this great vision of been able to do a badass headstand and other cool things because hell - it looks great and probably works your core like a boss.

I had kind of resorted to the fact that I would only ever do "preparation poses" in yoga for anything headstand or upside down related.

Then, one night I was playing this epic music - Putumayo World Music to be exact and I decided to pull out my yoga mat and give a headstand a go against the wall. What promoted this I have NO IDEA! But I went with it.

I did the prep a few times and then "piked" my one leg up against the wall and then the other and BAM!!!!!!!

It just goes to show when you are relaxed, in your own space and you give something a go without even thinking about it too hard it just kind of happens! And yes it is a bit of a h not taking your legs up slowly and also using the wall but I DID IT! Something I thought I might never be able to do and I did it!

We can tell ourselves all the time how we "can't" but really we can because you never know until you just break free of fear and doubt and you just dive in head first and DO!

I am still shocked that it all happened and I keep practicing and seeing if I can build strength to get up and down correctly and properly, but my oh my - small achievement is better than no achievement at all! I think it proves that what you tell yourself can be such a dangerous thing.

Self doubt and fear of failure can really hold you back. Sometimes a little bit of faith and maybe even a few falls  and picking yourself up and giving it a go again is what is really needed. It is so easy to beat ones self up on how we look, how smart we are, how good we are at things - but essentially when you strip it all way it is about you - and living one life where you get to try and experience new and amazing things all the time because you can and because you are able and have been given all the tools to do so.

My mindfulness going forward is going to be focused around a little more self belief - Now just to take some of my own advice...

I can't pin point an exact time I started yoga, I think it might have been about two years ago or more. I started because I needed to find something that worked for me and for my injury. It took awhile but once I got into into it I felt the change that it made to my body and my mind. My goal for this year, along with running is to shift and change my perception and feeling towards yoga and my own personal progress in the practice.

By nature I am a competitive person. I don't think having a competitive personality is a bad thing. I am not nasty competitive, I am eager competitive. If I have learnt anything from yoga is that it is not a competition. It is not about doing better than other people in the class or becoming the best. It is in actual fact, a deeply personal journey and if you stick to it and work on it, your mind and body can do incredible things (working on it myself). A lot of last year for me felt very frustrating, I felt like I never had the time to do the things I wanted to or desired to. Life just got busy, and that will not be allowed this year. There will be time!

I started my yoga journey at Virgin Active Green Point, I have since moved it to the Claremont Virgin because I now live this side. For me I could not afford to go to a yoga studio only, and I also enjoy having a gym contract, I find the gym yoga to be fantastic and the teachers are all trained yoga teachers who also teach elsewhere. I have also had the opportunity to practice at Yoga Studios like Yoga Zone and Yo Yoga which offer hot yoga and are a must if you're into trying yoga, both places offer specials for first time yogis!

Yoga helped not only with my injury, but also will loss. I have been fortunate enough to have a yoga mentor and "yoga dad" who has followed this journey with me. We met in yoga class and we still practice together whenever we get a chance. He came into my life when he was meant to and I am so grateful for that. Soon after I lost my own dad I used to cry at the end of ever class. Not just a gentle tear rolling down my cheek, I am talking full on ugly crying that came from deep inside and that I could not control. Every time practice finished in Savasana "corpse pose" I would cry. I spoke to my yoga teacher who confirmed what I suspected, the pose is the same pose that we ultimately leave this world in. It is a vulnerable pose that makes us feel exposed and open, it is also a restorative position in yoga. For a long time I struggled to do the pose without feeling a rush of emotion. I realised that it was my body releasing. It was me letting go, it was my therapy and healing. For awhile it was overwhelming but then I just embraced it. It still happens from time to time and I am grateful that yoga has the power to help me connect to my emotions in a safe environment with people who are loving and supportive.

In the last two years I have learnt from yoga that I do have control over my body, I know what it needs and when it needs it, what hurts and what feels amazing and what it means to really focus and make it about me, my journey and my ability, not everyone else's. Just before Christmas I tried some Hot Yoga classes and really loved it! I felt very strong and powerful! This year the classes I have gone too I have felt a bit nervous and struggled to switch off, my body has has been a bit tired from other forms of exercise I have been doing and  I guess I have a lot on my mind, but the point of yoga is to switch off and heal. I know that some classes will be great and some classes will be hard and my body won't do all that I want it to do, but I am learning still and thats ok, its a process, its not a race. I have to keep reminding myself and I have to actually practice what I preach and have written in these posts. Really I do.

(Pic by me taken at Yoga Zone)

Last year and this year I have been able to share my love and passion for yoga with friends which for me is very special. I believe that it connects people and helps us break out of our comfort zones together. I love that I have introduced friends to something that they now also love and enjoy. Its been nice to see and follow their journey and to feel happy and supportive of them. My biggest longterm goal will be at some point (in the distant future) to do a yoga teachers course and my first and foremost yoga goal is to save up for a Yoga Retreat in Bali that my friend and I are planning to go to together. (and that I have been drooling over for years).

Baby steps and self love are apart of my yoga journey this year. I remember feeling frustrated about a move I could not do because my back could not and would not ease up in the position, then I thought back to when I started and how I could not even do a simple Chaturanga pose, but now I can. Progress is key, even if its slow, I am making peace with the fact that I need to accept that things take time and with the right amount of focus and positivity they can be achieved. Its so easy to put ourselves down and focus on what we can't do instead of what we can do.

Neil always says to me, it's not a competition and if your not having fun doing something (sports related and other) then you should not be doing it. It should make you happy and make you feel good, it should not be effort or frustrate you. He is 100 percent right.

So for all the yoga fans lets make 2015 about getting on the mat with love, happiness, and positive intention!

In the last couple of weeks I have really enjoyed getting into a consistent routine with exercise and gyming  The only downfall is that currently, a lot of my college classes conflict with the yoga timetable at gym. I am still getting to some classes, but not as many as I would like to. Last week Sunday my friend and I tried out the Kundalini Yoga class at Claremont Virgin Active. It is a 90 minute evening class and pretty packed!

To be totally honest, we actually thought we were heading into a Hatha class. Only once the teacher introduced herself did we click! This was my first Kundalini class and I had always assumed (never assume) it was slightly more "airy fairy", compared to other yoga.

What is Kundalini Yoga - in short
Kundalini yoga is different to any other yoga I have tried. Just to give you a brief introduction, it is made up of meditation, mantras, physical exercise and breathing techniques. It engages all your untapped energy (prana) at the base of your spine and awakens each of the seven chakras. This type of yoga is very emotionally engaging and really awakens your senses. It is for everyone, a universal practice that is nondenominational. Kept secret and then taught by Yogi Bhajan who introduced to the west in the 1960's.

My personal experience
At the start of the class I was not prepared in anyway and having not researched this type of yoga I didn't know what to expect. The yoga teacher was really lovely and welcoming. She guided those of us who were new and explained everything with ease and grace. At first I struggled to follow her instruction and let go of my sense of control. I soon realised that most of the people in the class were regulars and this was a class really based on deeper experience not just the physical benefits of doing yoga and I let go.

You do not have to chant and you do not have to sing. Everything is guided and it is most certainly not airy fairy. The room is not heated but I worked up a serious sweat! I did find myself being more aware of self and a bit stiff the next day! It is different to my usual classes, it is something I will try again and I do recommend it. The class allowed me to not take myself so seriously and break down some boundaries. I also had a wonderful cry at the end of the class. As ridiculous as that may sound, I was feeling a little 'emotionally blocked' and by the end of the class I felt like I was in a safe environment where I could actually let go completely and it made me feel a lot better.

This type of yoga is not for everyone but I do suggest some research should be done before you go to a class because it can be a bit overwhelming and tricky to negate at first but if your open to trying something new then this is a winner!

If you have tried Kundalini Yoga I would love to hear your thoughts :)

(super eager got to class way too early)

So a bit of a cheat because today is Tuesday, but I did go back to yoga last night :) yay!
I love the Monday night class because I have been attending it for well over a year now and I love the teacher who takes the class  (Point Virgin Active). Having been MIA the last few months, it has been very frustrating missing out, yoga was the last form of exercise that I really needed to rest properly before doing (yoga is very neural based).

Been back at yoga was awesome! I was petrified most of the day, because I did not know what to expect and I  do have a tendency to push myself, but I did OK, once I was there and in the flow, the moment and back to a familiar place. I managed most things, took breaks when I needed to and really enjoyed that 90min escape in my mind. I really look forward to doing more yoga classes and building up my strength again, also getting more into yoga on a daily basis at home! Time to set some goals and work towards them.

I love Tara Stiles she always has such great informative videos. Her teaching style of yoga is really relaxed and incredibly helpful. When I am all better and back into exercising, I definitely want to try some of her videos. I posted one below that is great if your trying to work on your inversions. This is something I struggle personally in my
own yoga practice, so I can't wait to give this a go next year!

So as I have mentioned about a million times... I am not allowed to exercise until I am fully recovered from this whole meningitis thing. Naturally I am bleak...it came at the worst time. A time where I was super amped to get my summer body one! Now I have to put all that on hold. Naturally I think too much about it and stress about it, but most of all I just miss exercise. For the second time in my life I am not allowed to do something I love.

Is my body telling me to calm down and reassess the situation? It could be. Maybe I am not really concentration on my health and recovery and instead focusing on trying to get fitter and look more 'summer ready'. What I should be doing is focusing on healing myself and not pushing for the wrong things. As my boyfriend pointed out - it is not forever. I now feel when I can do yoga again, even though I will need to start from scratch, it will be an opportunity to really focused on yoga and have a more healing, holistic approach to it. I am basically getting a second chance to start over and this so it right :) (But I must at least meditate and work on that!)

So I went straight out of brand challenge to basically straight into hospital. It really is not my year. Seems I landed up with viral meningitis, which took almost three weeks to diagnose and then I still had to endure two trips to hospital (and two stays) as well as a lumber puncture, neck pain and awful head pain. I am out now. The not so ideal part is now having to recover. It can take up to 6 months to fully recover and in the mean time.....no exercise for nearly three months. eek. Once again, its a major wake up call to how important health is. Stress less - so hard to do, but so important.

The more we push our bodies and do everything to the max, we are asking for trouble. It is so important to stop and listen to what your body is telling you sometimes. I really had a big shock and wake up call. Stress brings about a low immune system which makes you more vulnerable to catching viruses. Oh, and not sleeping that's a biiiig problem. Pulling all nighters to get work done and functioning on empty is NEVER ok.

Since I can't exercise, not even yoga (sad sad sad) I decided to look at another aspect of yoga that is vitally important. Breathing

There are many different and complicated techniques that you can use. I focus on a more basic form of breathing (see picture below). Yoga breathing allows for a greater sense of spiritual and mental enlightenment. It includes a variety of health benefits and allows for the body to stay centred and focused. Especially when you are at your most stressed and anxious.

Going to be making a big effort in the next few months to really focus and try not push myself. Its hard to be patient when you want to exercise and go nuts. I think this is the perfect time to focus inwardly and work on keeping my mind, body and soul, calm and at ease.

If you have instagram you need to follow yoga_girl this chick is seriously inspirational and posts the best photos! Rachel Brathen lives and teaches yoga in Aruba (SO jealousy!!!) but travels a lot to teach various yoga workshops and hosts yoga retreats all over the USA. She is Swedish and started yoga in her early teens (clearly) and lives a fully yoga lifestyle
.
Rachel is one of the first people to take yoga from the mat to the water, in the form of Stand Up Paddle Boarding Yoga (SUP). I love looking at her pictures for inspiration. She writes really motivational words and is really interactive with her fans. I struggle to do inversions in yoga (in other words I can't do them) my dream is to be able to do a headstand or handstand. Rachel is the person that I admire most for her strength and attitude towards a yoga lifestyle!

I am not sure what it is. Last week in yoga I felt weak, off centre and lacking concentration  Since that class i have had a really rough week emotionally and I sometimes find I lack that feeling of being centred and grounded. On Saturday night after dinner at the boyf place, I pulled out my yoga mat and did a 30min session to try clear my head.

It made me realise, often your body is telling you something. I think because of all the emotions lately, I have worn myself out. Trying to fit in , gym , exercise, social, varsity, etc etc when I am basically running on empty. The 30min was great to shift focus and calm myself. I will definitely start doing more home sessions when my body tells me that it needs to. Most importantly, I will start doing things for me.

I have been back at yoga for awhile but I have not blogged about it in ages!!!! So here we are, back on for Yoga Monday's. I am hugely inspired by Miranda Kerr. I recently read her book Treasure Yourself. Filled with lots of positivity and lots of self worth. I really like her healthy, positive outlook and attitude towards life. The book is also filled with positive affirmations and some great tips for keeping yourself on the up. She also happens to be super good at yoga and has the body to prove what yoga can do!

The month of March was a bit of a crazy month. It really literally ended up been two weddings and a funeral. Possibly one of the craziest and all over the place months I have had.  Some great times, a few cries, college stress, not enough hours in the day, flying to JHB and missing my family. In the midst of all the chaos, I got sick, so yoga and gym were not fully attended to like they usually are.

To be honest struggle when I am thrown out of routine, especially gym and yoga. I have mentioned in my earlier posts I cant make the all the classes in the week and I try practice at home. For the month of April I am going to strive to find balance and make time to look after myself and my well-being  March was a eating, drinking, mourning, merry and celebratory month all rolled into one. Sometimes, well all the time actually, we cannot control what life will throw at us and what the next hurdle will be. Life is pretty busy and trying to find balance can be so stressful. But, I may not be able to achieve full balance but I can at least strive for a better balance and look for 20min a day to be calm, do some yoga stretching and relax.

Time to work hard, be inspired, put my head down and turn failures into victory's

This is such a fantastic video that has some really lovely Buddha Quotes and meditation music. It is really short and affective. Give it a go before your day starts and try and find some introspection. If your looking for some inspiration and something to calm the mind before busy week this will do the trick.

Last week yoga was a killer! I am struggling to get into the routine so I am hoping that today would kick of my year officially with yoga (back to varsity today) but I somehow hurt my knee on the weekend while playing with the sweetest labby dog in the world. So No yoga tonight. But here (above) is an easy step by step Sun Salutation. Do daily and first thing when you wake you to kick the body into awake mode, open up your lungs and get you centred for the day ahead :)

Just realised my post last week never happened! BUT I did go to class, and it was hard. Maybe I was not focused enough or not, maybe I was just weak. Either way I found myself feeling frustrated and cross that I could not do a lot of the things I usually could. But that's not what yoga is about. Some days will be hard, some days super easy. Either way you have to keep on keeping on. This past weekend, with 12 friends we did a yoga class in the garden, it was so much fun! Even better, some people had never done it before so it was exciting to see their enjoyment. I wont be going to class this evening but I will be back asap. Always remember, don't punish yourself, do your best, have faith, be strong but kind to yourself and be patient ;)

So good to be back at yoga last week. It was a very small class so I did feel a lot less distracted. I need to learn to really focus and switch off during yoga. I am reading a fantastic book at the moment on yoga and meditation and the benefits that they both hold. I am feeling a bit run down still so looking forward to class to rejuvenate me. Best part about this Monday, my friend Brigid is joining me! YAY I hope she likes it and comes more often. Its always great to have friends involved with something you enjoy.

Some yoga goals for the year:

Today is my first yoga class of the year, I am scared

I hope this year to maintain going to class
Being way more patient with myself
Researching and  reading more on yoga
Recruiting more of my friends to get involved
Working on my yoga at home as often as possible
