A lifestyle blog - Its a jumble from my world a bit of everything - loves, likes, lists.

So this post has been playing on my mind for sometime now, 9 months ago I decided to stop taking the Pill, I wanted to share this post about my experience and an app that has helped me through this journey.

Let me add here - going off the pill has to be something you want to do and for reason that fits you and your lifestyle. Its taken a lot of time and thought to sit down and find the courage to write an honest account about going off the pill and this is a personal experience, I am not a doctor or a medical professor I just simply decided to listen to my body.
I am not opposed to new forms of contraceptive nor do I think they are all bad, for many people they make life a lot easier, they assist with women who suffer with terrible period and ovarian problems and have helped women in different ways. Modern day contraceptive is a luxury that many women don't have access to and from a feminist stand point, I am sure its been pretty revolutionary. Again, I am not an expert and I have read many a debate and interesting article (which I am sure many of you have and I am not going to rehash or retell what many have already expressed with full honestly) around the pill and contraceptive but for me, after more than a decade it no longer felt right and it was a personal choice.

Intuition is possibly the most powerful tool we have and yet, we have been taught not to listen to it or even entertain it in some cases - this has got to stop ladies.

About a year ago my intuition basically kicked up every possible sign it could throw at me that it was time to take a much needed break off the pill.

Having gone on the pill at age 17 for a pretty bad (ish) skin problem, the thought of going off it literally made me feel ill. So as any good modern day lass would, I spent a solid 4 hours lying awake one night googling what would happen if I stopped taking a tablet I had taken for more than a decade - worst. mistake. ever. Never google anything because honestly the internet is beyond depressing and not one person had anything positive to say. Everything sounded devastating and catastrophic (I kid you not) which scared me even more, what had I been taking for so long and what had it done to MY body?

I decided to speak to a variety of friends and people I know who had also been on the pill and either stopped or were considering stopping it.

I had always been pretty proud of the fact that after years of being on the pill I just simply didn't get my period, la la la la wonderful! No hormonal symptoms really, Wonderful! No PMS and mood swings or period pain - horrrayyy! But in theory I started to actually just feel 100 percent out of touch with my body and everything female that I wanted to connect with and understand. I started noticing (and please internet police chill here) that during each month I experienced pretty intense pain in my calves and legs and my ankles started swelling - odd as the pill I was on is know as a diuretic right, well no - it just didn't feel right.

I am ashamed to say, I had been the person to eye-roll at women who have in actual fact had medical complaints from the pill. Well now I can understand there are always two sides to a story and everyone's personal experience is exactly that - personal and real to them, so massive respect to all the brave women out there!

Why I decided to go off the pill
  • I felt out of touch with my body
  • My anxiety was getting worse and I could not pin point my emotions
  • My weight went up and I felt demotivated (no necessarily from the pill)
  • I experienced symptoms like swelling (something that is not genetic or in my family) my ankles and feet became puffy
  • I no longer had a period which felt weird and unnatural (although convenient)
  • I stopped using sleeping tables after three years and wanted to be "pill free" for a while
  • I realised that my body just needed a break, I literally could feel my body telling me it was time for a change
  • My skin had never really gone through the pubescent stages it needed to and I didn't want to wait until I was wanting to fall pregnant one day, going off the pill and experience every possible hormonal change as well as bad skin
  • I didn't understand my emotions and felt like I didn't have control of them
  • I just didn't feel ME and I felt stinted, stuck, plateaued and average
After talking to tons of incredible, supportive and objective women I decided to stop taking the pill. I prepared myself for the worst - never getting a regular period, full blow acne and a life of misery and every other privileged complaint I could fathom from google.

What I happened when I stopped taking the pill in September 2016

(also not necessarily linked to stopping the pill)
  • To my surprise my period regulated straight away (different for every woman)
  • My skin did a full reboot of me being 16 and basically jumped into borderline adult acne mode (mainly at a particular time of the month) BUT in saying this, my skins healing time has improved drastically and taking zinc tablets does help (the skin issue has been the hardest part for.)
  • Weirdly enough my sleep cycle improved too
  • My energy levels improved
  • My ankles, feet and calves no longer felt painfully swollen
  • My various emotions in a month now made sense - hello hormones
  • I started reading articles about hormones and how to balance them: Mind Body Green is a helpful source of info
  • My weight stayed the same - but my motivation for exercise started coming back and I stopped having so much water retention and feeling swollen all. of. the. time.
  • I felt far more conscious of my body and the different things it was experiencing during the changes and transition which felt like a huge positive
  • I actually feel a lot happier and healthier in general
When I decided to stop taking the pill after the first month I went straight to my gynie and expected a long winded lecture and instead I was met with a lot of support and comfort. I showed my gynie an app I was using and he said he highly recommend all of his patients track their periods and cycles.

So which amazing app is it? I downloaded an App called CLUE that a friend introduced me to. ladies this app is a game changer. seriously, even my gynie said it is important to track your period even if you take the pill, information about your monthly cycle says a lot about your health as well.

So what is CLUE? Other than the most empowering female apps out there (in my humble opinion) it is the best way to actually understand body and your emotions.
  • You can use CLUE  to track your period, ovulation / fertility and PMS.
  • You can use it even if you are not on contraceptive and if you are, they list pretty much every single form that is out there
  • Clue generates cycle reports each month and emails them to you
  • It tracks everything (see examples below)
  • You can track emotions and habits even when you do not have your period
  • You can link CLUE to your friends: really helpful when you are ugly crying on the phone and your bestie reminds you that you are smack bang in the middle of hardcore PMS
  • It helps predict the future - clue starts learning about you, so when your next period will be fpr example
  • Clue offers something called "cycle science" to help you understand your symptoms
  • The list is pretty endless when it comes to using this app!
  • It has a meditation option and a host of other cool emotions you can plug in to help track your emotions
Here is an example from my app:

How clue and stopping the Pill have helped me:
I have been off the pill for 9 months and I can safely say its been an interesting journey.
Using CLUE has helped me gain a better understanding of body and what it is going through. I feel more self aware- more in tune with my body than ever before.

During my fertile window I feel great, my skin clears up and my confidence is at an all time high.  The week before my period - emotional, insecure and tearful (but at least I know why).
Instead of trying to "fix" the tough things I am going through my cycle, I have learnt to start embracing them, understanding myself, building self love rituals and focusing on being kind to myself - I mean hello, women are pretty badass and can dominate the world whilst having a period.

    WE are freaking magical!

Overall I now have a better understanding of what my body does each month, I am interested in understanding hormones and my emotions and CLUE has helped me stop feeling like weight loss is a major goal in my life and my focus is now about my overall health, well being and building healthy habits with love and respect for my body.

Stopping the pill has made me want to explore a more holistic approach to my health, body and skin care which I plan on elaborating on it the future.

Using an app like CLUE can help you understand your hormones, emotions and habits, plus its actually a really nicely designed app that is just cool to interact with :)

Trust your gut and instinct and listen to your body and what it needs and wants. Do your research, talk to people, speak to your gynie and do what is right for you! It is your body and it's pretty damn amazing, so treat it well!

Please feel free to add your thoughts and input to this post below in the comment section

So the day before yesterday I decided to do this post - it took time and effort and I published it with pride and guess what...... instead of deleting a draft post - I deleted this one. To sooth this meaningless drama - I ate half a slab of chocolate. So this is my second attempt. Holding thumbs.

I am not a huge beauty product person because I have always had sensitive skin (and a limited budget) and because I am the kind of person when trying to find a product in a store that I don't know anything about but really know I need, I generally break out into a cold sweat and hide in a corner so I can ask twitter what I should do. So, I like to try and keep things simple and have learnt over the years to not buy products "just because" or "because they look nice/ have pretty packaging/ or because its on sale". Now when I find something that really works for my skin I try stick to it :)

These are my four favourite face and body essentials that work wonders in summer and really work for sensitive skin like mine. The thing I like most about these products is that a little goes a long way and they are all affordable and easy to stock up on.

Eucerin Sun Protection SPF 50 for Face

Ok I will admit - I am a little late to the game with using sunblock/sunscreen consistently! I know, I know! I have always tried and used tined moisturises with a SPF etc but most sunblock has caused my skin to break out or literally slides off my face. This is truly a sunscreen that is great for your face and neck and it is water resistant! I use this bad boy everyday especially after I noticed that sitting in endless traffic was causing my face to burn and develop sun spots on the one side - eeeek. While sun damage is not ideal and I am a little late to the game, I try my best to keep my face out the sun and this really works for me as a daily sunscreen that lasts.

    Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleaner

Honestly in my opinion the holy grail of face wash. I have always struggled with my skin. Having Mediterranean genes means oily skin, my mom refused to let me take any medication for my skin (which I am kind of happy about now in my old age) so I struggled through people telling me what to do and how to solve the problem when I WAS already doing all of those things (drink water, avoid oily junk food, etc etc). I also went through every face wash I could find....literally!!! I came across Kiehl's and there is no turning back. Its the only face wash that is gentle on my skin and also makes it feel incredibly clean without drying it out or leaving it oily and patchy. A small drop goes along way to a foam party on your face! Full of vitamin E and avo oil its a real dream and I would like to think its helped with controlling and cleaning up a lot of my skin problems. This winner is in the 200's price range and last me several months - yes SEVERAL!

Nivea Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10

Please can I personally thank the person that created this product? Not sure if its really good marketing or really in my mind but after seeing my friends results from using the lotion I was totally convinced and went out and bought a bottle. I apply it every night after a shower to my thighs, stomach and hips and I can see my skin is looking smoother and firmer! Do not apply in the middle of summer in the insane heat and then leave the house - this is really not a good idea! A hot shower and a good gentle massage followed by a good nights rest will almost guarantee you wake up feeling like a leggy goddess.

    Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

Yup been down this road before of poorly matched base or cheap foundation that causes drama and even expensive foundation that was well, just expensive and pointless. Then finally!!!!!!!!! This beaut of a foundation made its way into my life after having a magical love affair with BB Cream I decided it was time to step up the coverage for certain events. It is glorious and leaves a dewy fresh look! Best part - its from Clicks, inexpensive and a little bit truly goes a long way in terms of coverage. It doesn't cake and it is easy to touch up. I found my dream colour and then they ran out of stock / may not be stocking my colour anymore (weeps dramatically) but after scooping out the last drop of my first bottle I managed to find my colour!

Do you use any of the above products? what kind of results have they given you? I would love to know which four products work for you and why you love them!

Its taken several tries to write this post because I can see the positives and the negatives of 2015. I started writing this post more than a month ago and have written and deleted it about a million times.

It was by far the hardest and most gruelling year. I find myself back where I was exactly a year ago feeling like I achieved nothing and all my hard work has not paid off - and maybe it didn't, maybe it doesn't reflect in my bank balance or in my current situation, but what did pay off and what I did achieve was a massive humbling learning curve (and some gained strength).

It opened my eyes to truly see that without confidence and self worth, without belief in your ability and your skills, personality and over all who you are - you become stinted. to sum up the year I would use the following three words: Fear, lack of confidence and worry.

To allow your mind and heart to be controlled by those three things is pretty hard to just skim over. 2015 felt like everything I had always believed I was and all that confidence I thought I really had, was really not manifested with the right intention and it was becoming hard to feel it and keep it going when inevitably I felt like crumbling. In truth, I was crumbling, the year took so many different turns and whirs that it literally made me feel like I was at no point fully present to experience special moments in my life. It was all heavily masked by fear, lack of confidence and worry - constantly.

I spent most of 2015 trying to find and be who I was and stop being this person I wasn't. This new person had no gumption and was stuck in a fearful place of trying to do instead of actually DOING. I couldn't even read one book and get through it without feeling overwhelmed by some kind of fear or anxiety. I let work elements rule my life, I let others thoughts and opinions overwhelm me, I couldn't relax, I felt like I was constantly putting out fires no matter how desperately I just wanted a normal, stable existence. I literally took self doubt to another level and lost track of all the good I have within me and all that I have to be TRULY grateful for in my life.

2015 kicked my butt so hard - it put me in every possible worst case vulnerable position and forced me to approach it, deal with it and confront it. I didn't run a half marathon, I didn't get to do more yoga, I didn't do road trips, I didn't laugh and let go. I gained 6kgs, slept less than ever before, worked harder than I ever have before, saw my injury flare up even more and a long with that a world of emotional confrontation that I thought could not ever eclipse losing a parent and yet, somehow it did - or it combined the two together for an all double whammy of confronting everything I thought I was so brave and able to do. Sometimes even the strongest have to take a tumble..................best part is you at some point stand back up.

When you do stand up and open your eyes and really see, you really notice what the hell is going on you REALLY want to and need to make the changes that your life needs and wants you to make.- like asap.

2015 I got to experience working for two different companies, it saw my friend get on a plane with my to scatter my dads ashes - without me asking her, and held my hand through two flights of major tears.  I graduated. I also met the most incredible strong, dedicated and caring people through two different jobs who impacted my life positively and helped me see my potential inside and out. I had the love and support of a caring and patient partner who deserves a gold statue in his name. It saw many tears, it saw many shaky legs and scared heart but 2015 shook me alive to the point where I truly hope I can make the change I need to in 2016 to be fearless and truly confident in myself. I keep thinking how this is really just one life and one chance to live it but now it's time to really practice it.

When you have the basics and the love of those in your life the rest is simply a bonus.

    The lessons for 2015

Be gentle with yourself -being a sensitive person has its pro's and con's, it is how you manage it

Don't give so much of yourself to people who can use it against you or hurt you- be aware of sharing too much

Stand up for yourself - say no, say no thank you, say it doesn't work for you or you disagree - SPEAK

    Be patient with yourself

Confront fear head on and do - just do. Don't wonder or ask questions

Really just stop asking questions and waiting for guidance, help, advice, a sign from the moon, a special solar eclipse or a wish list of just empty words and text messages with mini stories written - jus stop asking questions and waiting

Fear is healthy to drive you forward but you are the only person who can take that first step

You can get everyone else's input and everyone else's advice but at the end of the day you can only trust yourself

Believe in the good - the real greater good of people, yourself, your circumstance, your imperfections

Be present - enjoy and be present - BE PRESENT because you won't get back that time  - get off your damn phone

Don't indulge in yourself too much - self pity is self pity and its not going to attract any positivity

Don't put yourself down - why? why do we do this?

Don't compare your life to another living soul

Take action - don't wait to be rescued, rescue yourself

    Be bold and brave

Listen to your heart, your gut and your body - they are all right

    Look up

Fail at something but at least know you tried

Be fierce, be joyful, be loud and excited

    Be focused and forge ahead

If you stumble pause to see what is around you but don't linger - get up

Breathe -but deep breathing to the bottom of your belly, breathing that makes you feel beyond grateful to be alive

Trust the process, the journey, yourself

Others opinions of your personality are not necessarily right - learn from them but don't absorb it

Give without expecting anything in return

Don't let any person ever manipulate you or hurt you - just don't

Enjoy and believe in having the ability to problem solve or be alone in your thoughts

Don't let your mind jump ahead and don't be defensive

Think of intention and what people's intention is

Really accept that some people come into your life for a reason or a season and it is not personal

Be vulnerable, be fearless and fearful with the right amount to make you want to tackle things with excitement and adventure, dream big, dream small, take no judgement, take no bullshit, take hugs and take kind complements and really believe them.

Take a whole moment. I will always be a worrier, always have my weird quirks and chips in my armour, but at least I now know where I don't want to be and who I wont be.

Essentially - Just take some risks, have some laughs, make a damn good gin and tonic, do more yoga and remind the people in your life how freaking much you love them.

I decided to make some Gratitude Mantras because it is Monday and it's a brand new year and sometimes we need to take a moment of gratitude and appreciation for even the most simple and small things in our lives and to remind us that we have the strength to embrace who we are and where we are on our own personal journeys.

I am going to be making more Mantras through out the year with different themes and feelings for a little bit of positive energy and motivation each month.

These words are not my own - I wish they were, but to be honest they sum up everything I have felt lately and everything I have wanted to say. Sometimes words so powerful can shake you and wake you up. They can change a simple thought, they can push you in a the right direction and they can motivate you to see things you may have never seen before.

My mom sent me this mail and I have chosen to post it on my blog because I believe these     words and I believe we all need to hear this sometimes.

A Tough Love Letter to those Who Forget They are Magic

When you look at yourself do you see what I see? I’m thinking not.

    I think you forget.

    That you are magic.

So, here it is. Read this slowly and take it all in.

From here onward, no more doubting your self. No more second guessing. No more being afraid to be exactly who you are.

No more failing to recognise how enchanting and mesmerising your presence is.
It is time to stop comparing yourself to others. It’s not healthy. Believe me when I say the only place that takes you is down the rolling road to low self-esteem.

No more aching because you can’t make someone love you. No more trying desperately hard to win over someone’s affections. No more frantically running after those who are entangled with others.

No more chasing - full stop.

Love and happiness should never be chased. You will never ever catch them. Not ever.

True love is like a firefly and is magnetised to the light. All you need to do is glow. It will come to you.

You are magical. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It is okay to believe in unicorns and dragons, and to know that you are made of stardust and are a unique miracle whose existence is essential to earth.

You just need to open your eyes wide enough to really see that anything is possible and that you are not bound down, you are limitless.

Fairy-tales and happy-ever-afters exist, but here is the thing - you have to create these things for yourself. No other man or woman is going to do it for you. Not your papa or your soul mate or anyone else out there knows how to build the life you dream of. Only you can do that. And you are entirely capable. Nothing is ever going to matter as much to that exquisite heart of yours as that which you achieve with your ingenious mind, a load of imagination, and your restless creative hands.

Also, let me let you in on a little secret. No one around you has it all figured out. No one. I’ve written this, but believe me when I say I’ve written it as much for myself as anyone else. And if I read it a hundred times over, parts of it still won’t fully sink in. I will still doubt myself.

That’s because we’ve spent years being conditioned into believing that we cannot be the fullest versions of ourselves. We are afraid to stand in our own brilliant radiance and shine, as every time we try someone is hiding in the wings ready to knock us straight back down.

There will always be those who are watching from the stalls in the arena, praying and hoping we fall. We’ll allow them the role of spectator if they really must, but make sure you shock them to the core when you show how fast you are willing to rebound again and again.

Goddammit even if you stumble, you’ve got to at least give it one hell of a shot.
You are a work of art. All artwork is a process. All masterpieces take time and the most important thing is progression—not perfection.

We must witness the beauty in ourselves; it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks - we are the only ones that need to see our self-worth.

Just like with art, those who are also willing to do the hard work will also recognise the beauty in others who have done the same. If we are not willing to do any work and we remain stagnant, again, we will attract those who also do not wish to grow.

Just because you are a little different from others doesn’t mean you are weird, strange, crazy or odd. You are not a square peg, or a round one for that matter. Your shape will change every single day.

You are you and of all the seven billion people on this planet, not one other person shares your blueprint. It is essential that you learn to appreciate and adore your differences. Until you do, no one else stands a chance of getting to know all the bits and pieces that make up your puzzle and they won’t work out how to love them either.

It’s time to stop searching for approval. It is time to stop asking or hoping to be liked. It’s time to stop looking for love in the wrong places. You are never going to find the truth in things when you are seeking. They will always elude you. You will only see the illusion of what you hope to find.

We are never going to gain the approval of all others. It is impossible to be accepted and liked by everyone. We will never find the true essence in love when we do not sit back and allow it to delicately touch us and let us know it has arrived.

And there are always going to be those who judge, speak harshly or find pleasure from criticising or putting us down. Negativity stems from fear and jealousy. People are afraid of what they do not understand.

When you shine, your brightness hurts their eyes. It dazzles and bewilders them. Your light touches the edges of their shadow. It highlights parts of them that they are afraid to look at. It is easier for some people to tear others down rather than build themselves up.

Not everyone will want to see you soar. And that’s okay. When you are flying high you won’t even notice or care what others think. You will see that those flying by your side are the ones who will pause to be the wind blowing beneath your wings if you weaken. Those are the ones who will help you climb higher, not be the cause of your fall.

If someone is happy with themselves they will never feel the need to pull another person down.

Don’t get drawn in by them or pulled under; open your heart, do not judge and above all, show them love. Always remember, hurt people hurt people.

You’ll make mistakes, plenty of them. You always will. Here’s the thing. It’s not the mistakes that are made that matter in the end—what really counts is how we rectify them.

We can’t take an eraser to the past, although, we can turn each negative into a positive. There’s more to be learned from mistakes than anything else life shows us.

So, promise me: Let go of perfection. It doesn’t exist. Believe in magic. It exists.

And I have one last promise to ask.

Above all else, if it is the only thing you believe in:

    Believe in yourself.

It’s not always easy, but with practice, progression and patience, absolutely anything is possible.

Often its hard tot get some proper downtime - no phones and no interruptions so this was a really special day that allowed boyf and I some proper down time and the chance to spoil ourselves!

The Steenberg Wine Estate is a firm favourite, it is super close to home and its gorgeous.
We went on a super cold rainy day so we had an amazing big fire to sat at and the beautiful view of the green rolling lawns with the vineyards in the background. How beautiful is the decor in the lounge area?

Next stop was the gorgeous Catharina's situated on the farm. We were welcome to the soft voice of Louise Day followed by a beautiful table near another cosy fire. They were running a special at time for three course I could not back my excitement`2

My first course was the most incredible mushroom risotto which I am going to admit is the best risotto I have ever eaten  and from there it literally got better and better! We had a fantastic special 3 courses R195pp

The food is beautifully presented and delicious, its hard not to feel relaxed and content. Felt really spoilt to experience this amazing food in a beautiful setting with such a special person. What a treat!

In December Neil and I embarked on a mini road trip that took us to three different spots, I will elaborate on each one with a post soon, but for now this post is focused on my surf lessons at our second road trip stop, the beautiful J-bay!

One of my goals this year is to be able to surf, without Neil having to literally help me lug a a massive board in and out of the water and basically push me into every wave! Not that he doesn't do a fantastic job keeping me calm and encouraging me to actually stay on the board instead of jumping off every time I think a wave is too big, when in actual fact its a tiny baby foamy. I have no shame.

I obviously developed this interest because the boyf surfs and by surfs I mean its a way of life, part of his DNA and it's his biggest passion that he has been doing for pretty much 20 years. I have grown to appreciate the sport and done my own research into it so I can at least stay up to date on conversations and also share in his passion for it because it is pretty damn exciting and cool to be perfectly honest. It got a whole lot better when I started following the Women's ASP World Tour and suddenly realised that female surfing is pretty badass and super progressive! There are a host of female surfers that I follow on social media and they are not just about looking pretty (which they all do) they are all incredible skilled in the surf and very inspiring!

I have been out at Muizenberg a few times with a rented board (or massive door more like) and its always fun, its very shallow and pretty crowed so on a busy day it gets a bit hectic. Because I am naturally a competitive person who needs to get everything right the first time, Neil had to keep reminding me its about having fun and also about building confidence in the ocean. We often head out to Koel Baai and go for swims in the ocean and whenever we are anywhere near the sea I make the effort to swim and build confidence in the sea, I also love the sea so that helps. Neil always says you should never fear the sea, you should only show it respect.

I was really excited to have some private lessons in J-bay, not that Neil isn't a brilliant surf instructor, he is! But he does get all my sob stories and obviously is completely empathetic and understanding to my competitive nature, and he has surfed for so long so often his instructions are "Just go" "Just stand up"! Like sure, it's SO EASY!

So back to the private surf lessons, it's always good to have an outsider or surf school teach you how to surf as they take it right back to the basics. I started out my first lesson with Son Surf School instructor Kelvin who is a legend and couches some of the top SA Billabong female surfers (no pressure Nat's). He obviously took the fact that I had been out a few times with Neil as me being a bit better than I actually am, so before I knew it we were in deep water with actual waves coming in and me basically manoeuvring  a massive mini mal around the ocean. Of course we started out with surf basics on the shore at the main beach, but once you are out there away from the foamies it's a little scary and you are not thinking about the perfect standing pose! kelvin did a great job at keeping me calm, chatting to me throughout, offering encouragement and also giving great tips. I will share some of my own tips a little later in this post.

So first day success, after getting endlessly thrashed I eventually got up and actually stayed up long enough to pretty much ride a (tiny) wave. YAY! It was an incredible feeling and a massive confidence boost, best of all Neil witnessed the whole thing from his spot on the beach. That night I felt pretty pumped so we booked a second lesson for the next morning very early. The conditions were a lot different and a lot more shallow with the water pretty much sucking up off the sand. In order to document my success (ego from day before) I agreed to have the photographer join us in the water to get some pics of me getting barrelled LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

I now see how in deeper water it actually makes a big difference and it is a whole lot better because when you come off a board in shallow water the ocean floor is not very comfortable and the sand is not so gentle when you land on your butt.... lesson learnt. Although I didn't have as much success on day two and most of the photos are of me falling on my face, I still went out and challenged myself and also gave it my all.  I wish I had pictures from day one so I could look more badass but these are the best of the lot so I will share them with you.

Me on a wave at the back. I promise you it was a lot bigger in my mind

Me taking forever to stand up

Me about to stand up and then soon after falling on my face - in the foamies.

So all in all surfing in J-bay was really fun and uncrowded even thought there are a lot of learners in the water you always feel safe and everyone is very supportive! I want to keep it up for sure and do some more sessions out at Muizenberg - and become really badass on my own LOL.

Here is a list of my findings and tips from Neil, surf instructor, friends and my own experience.

    • The waves are never as big and rough as they seem when your lying on a board. It is just water - especially if your in a shallow section.
    • Practice "jumping up" on the actual beach, go from lying to standing and keep practicing even at the gym - muscle memory is pretty amazing and will help when you are out there.
    • Focus on your core, use your arms to get you up, don't just try stand only using your legs.
    • Make sure you lie on the centre of the board, not too far forward or back.
    • Practice a "paddle motion" out of the water, again to build muscle memory and strength.
    • If you fall or bail, put your hands in front of your face to protect you from having the board fly into you.
    • Be aware of the people around you.
    • If you are getting tired, rest and then go back out. Like anything you have to build up strength.
    • Laugh at yourself, the majority of people who get it right the first time are kids, mainly because they are fearless and they are so tiny they can simply pop up so easily, plus they have no expectations and it's pure enjoyment for them.
    • You are always safe when you are with instructors and friends who are experienced, trust them.
    • Falling in the sea is a lot less painful and dangerous than falling on your face on land, take comfort in that.
    • A 90min lesson is a good amount of time to build confidence and have fun.
    • If you are surfing further out and bigger waves try and figure out when you should be duck-diving under or going over the wave (this is my struggle and I end of bailing).
    • Have fun and laugh, its suppose to be fun and its also a seriously good work-out (google surfer girls please - abs for days).
    • Find what board works for you and it doesn't matter how big it is.
    • Go as often as you can and build confidence around it.
    • Find a surf buddy who is at the same level as you so you can progress together.
    • Stand up - just do it, don't think about it, don't take too long, don't worry about falling, just get up, stand up and do it because you can and when you do it feels absolutely amazing!
Ladies - get your hands on The Surfer Girl Handbook published by SurfGirl Magazine in association with ROXY. Full amazing tips, exercises, health advice, board advice and general stuff you need to know about the ocean, surfing and how to make it a part of your life!

I hope you all get a chance to experience some surf lessons and even if you don't want to make it a regular thing you should at least go once to try it out and have fun! There are loads of amazing Surf Schools in Muizenberg and places to rent boards if your not into having a lesson. Best of all, you get to finish off with a delicious coffee and look out at the beautiful view! And you will sleep like a baby after you surf that I can promise - you also may not be able to lift your arms for a few days….but so worth it :)

I can't pin point an exact time I started yoga, I think it might have been about two years ago or more. I started because I needed to find something that worked for me and for my injury. It took awhile but once I got into into it I felt the change that it made to my body and my mind. My goal for this year, along with running is to shift and change my perception and feeling towards yoga and my own personal progress in the practice.

By nature I am a competitive person. I don't think having a competitive personality is a bad thing. I am not nasty competitive, I am eager competitive. If I have learnt anything from yoga is that it is not a competition. It is not about doing better than other people in the class or becoming the best. It is in actual fact, a deeply personal journey and if you stick to it and work on it, your mind and body can do incredible things (working on it myself). A lot of last year for me felt very frustrating, I felt like I never had the time to do the things I wanted to or desired to. Life just got busy, and that will not be allowed this year. There will be time!

I started my yoga journey at Virgin Active Green Point, I have since moved it to the Claremont Virgin because I now live this side. For me I could not afford to go to a yoga studio only, and I also enjoy having a gym contract, I find the gym yoga to be fantastic and the teachers are all trained yoga teachers who also teach elsewhere. I have also had the opportunity to practice at Yoga Studios like Yoga Zone and Yo Yoga which offer hot yoga and are a must if you're into trying yoga, both places offer specials for first time yogis!

Yoga helped not only with my injury, but also will loss. I have been fortunate enough to have a yoga mentor and "yoga dad" who has followed this journey with me. We met in yoga class and we still practice together whenever we get a chance. He came into my life when he was meant to and I am so grateful for that. Soon after I lost my own dad I used to cry at the end of ever class. Not just a gentle tear rolling down my cheek, I am talking full on ugly crying that came from deep inside and that I could not control. Every time practice finished in Savasana "corpse pose" I would cry. I spoke to my yoga teacher who confirmed what I suspected, the pose is the same pose that we ultimately leave this world in. It is a vulnerable pose that makes us feel exposed and open, it is also a restorative position in yoga. For a long time I struggled to do the pose without feeling a rush of emotion. I realised that it was my body releasing. It was me letting go, it was my therapy and healing. For awhile it was overwhelming but then I just embraced it. It still happens from time to time and I am grateful that yoga has the power to help me connect to my emotions in a safe environment with people who are loving and supportive.

In the last two years I have learnt from yoga that I do have control over my body, I know what it needs and when it needs it, what hurts and what feels amazing and what it means to really focus and make it about me, my journey and my ability, not everyone else's. Just before Christmas I tried some Hot Yoga classes and really loved it! I felt very strong and powerful! This year the classes I have gone too I have felt a bit nervous and struggled to switch off, my body has has been a bit tired from other forms of exercise I have been doing and  I guess I have a lot on my mind, but the point of yoga is to switch off and heal. I know that some classes will be great and some classes will be hard and my body won't do all that I want it to do, but I am learning still and thats ok, its a process, its not a race. I have to keep reminding myself and I have to actually practice what I preach and have written in these posts. Really I do.

(Pic by me taken at Yoga Zone)

Last year and this year I have been able to share my love and passion for yoga with friends which for me is very special. I believe that it connects people and helps us break out of our comfort zones together. I love that I have introduced friends to something that they now also love and enjoy. Its been nice to see and follow their journey and to feel happy and supportive of them. My biggest longterm goal will be at some point (in the distant future) to do a yoga teachers course and my first and foremost yoga goal is to save up for a Yoga Retreat in Bali that my friend and I are planning to go to together. (and that I have been drooling over for years).

Baby steps and self love are apart of my yoga journey this year. I remember feeling frustrated about a move I could not do because my back could not and would not ease up in the position, then I thought back to when I started and how I could not even do a simple Chaturanga pose, but now I can. Progress is key, even if its slow, I am making peace with the fact that I need to accept that things take time and with the right amount of focus and positivity they can be achieved. Its so easy to put ourselves down and focus on what we can't do instead of what we can do.

Neil always says to me, it's not a competition and if your not having fun doing something (sports related and other) then you should not be doing it. It should make you happy and make you feel good, it should not be effort or frustrate you. He is 100 percent right.

So for all the yoga fans lets make 2015 about getting on the mat with love, happiness, and positive intention!

A few weeks ago we celebrated our anniversary at Steenberg Wine estate with some wine tasting and then a ridiculously delicious tapas dinner at Bistro 1682, one of the two restaurants on the farm. This place is really a slice of magic hidden in the suburbs, it's the second time we have been there and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a special date night location or a celebratory meal!

We started out with some Wine Tasting at the bar overlooking the lush lawn with the moody mountains in the background. Tasting start at R20pp for five wines from the premium and super premium range (if you buy a bottle the tasting is for free) there are a variety of tasting options that also include a cheese or food pairing, see here.

My favourite wine was the Klein Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2014. I love the label and the freshness of the wine with flavours of peaches and pears, pineapple and passion fruit.

We went specifically for the tapas which are incredible. This picture is a major lie because we had more than this! But I didn't have time to take more pictures because I was too busy savoury and revelling in the deliciousness. As seen below angel fish spring rolls, calamari,  three cheese fritters and patatas bravos (the most incredible potato chips you will ever eat).

And without a doubt my favourite - the Arancini- sundried tomato and basil risotto with paprika mayo.

They also have breakfast and lunch menu which I have heard people rave about, so always make sure you book! Stay posted with events that they host throughout the year here.

Let me know your experience and what you can recommend next time we go!

I have always wanted a leather bag, mainly because I know what a good investment one is and the fact that every bag I have ever bought that is non-leather always ends up falling apart and is an overpriced waste. So I began doing some research and checking out various local leather brands and I also checked out some big retailers, but honestly, I could not justify spending thousands on a mass made product. OK, now I just sound a little pompous but bear with me here...

I ran into a friend who mentioned this amazing leather bag she had seen at the Bay Harbour Market and it cost a smooth R450. At first I was thinking, sure sure thats cool but I doubt that is the price?!? I did some major research and found it all to be true and thus leading me to the Bay Harbour Market only to be found my dream bag was in actual fact, sold out.

Obviously I am thrilled that the company is doing so well and that their products literally fly off the very cool and hip racks that they sell them from, but my heart was a little broken. I phoned them and was reassured that they would be sold the following Saturday as the Biscuit Mill. So like a creepy stalker I hung around the stall before it had even opened and waited for the stock to arrive and then BAM! Dream leather bag and I became one.

So who is this amazing brand you may ask? Well, its Called ROWDY and I am obsessed with them.

ROWDY believe "that customers receive value in the form of the hand crafted leather goods that are certified for life and priced at the levels that are fair for everyone involved and represent their true cost". I am so down with this! Another win is that the bags are locally made and each salesperson is trained and skilled to be empowered as entrepreneurs.

They do not sell any of their bags in stores, they keep to markets ( they also sell at various markets in Spain) and they now have a fantastic site where you can shop from directly.  (I waited for them to get more stock of the brown leather and settled on this beauty).

Tote Bags with zip - R450 (R350 without) and it has a nifty inner pocket for all the little bits and pieces. Totes come in a soft buttery colour, black, grey and different shades of brown.

    Rucksacks are R950

    Duffle bags are R1300

The customer service is really incredible and I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and various associates who are incredibly passionate about what they do and keen to help and assist people so that they too can have the pleasure of owning one of these bags. The thing I like about it the most is that its incredibly light, even though it has a ton of my stuff in it, the bag never weighs me down, it feel comfortable and natural and I am 100% satisfied with this purchase because I know it will last a long time, I also love the rustic look and feel!

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift or simply keen to spoil yourself, I highly recommend these beautiful bags. If you don't get round to making it to the Bay Harbour Market or The Biscuit Mill, check out the ROWDY online store and ROWDY Facebook Page.

If you own one of these beauties I would love to hear your story :)
